Statistical Methods

Description→

Description

Good mastery of statistical tools is essential for the realisation and improvement of most industrial and services activities.

It is particularly crucial in these following 3 areas :

1. Laboratories
The accreditation norm ISO 17025 requires mastery of uncertainties determination: accuracy, precision and trueness of measurements must be understood and thoroughly evaluated. Rules for evaluating and expressing uncertainty in measurement are established in the GUM: Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement published by the Joint Committee for Guides in Metrology.

2. Production plants
Financial losses and customer perception deteriorations are often caused by high percentages of defective items and more importantly by the inability to detect and remove them before they reach end users. Since the 30’s and the rise of mass production, companies throughout the world have used control charts and capability indices to provide a data-based quality and process control. This SPC (Statistical Process Control) tools constitute a sine qua non for scrap reduction, increase of the OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) and customer claims prevention.

3. Step change process improvement
Step changes towards cost reduction and product quality improvement often require the realisation of specific management controlled projects. To that end, various tools have been designed throughout the 20’s century to better control variability and more specifically to determine what sort of data need to be collected, how they need to be processed and interpreted. For instance, ANOVA (Anlaysis of Variance) and DOX (Design Of Experiments) enables project managers to better compare sets of data and design experimental programs to quantify the impact of influence parameters on Critical To Quality measures. In the years 80’s all these tools started to be compiled and structured within a full management approach that took the denomination of 6 Sigma. 6 Sigma is now widely used to carry out process improvement oriented step change projects.
